6/18/11 Newton KOA, Newton, IA Site 26

This is an older campground that just recently became a KOA. We had a long, narrow gravel pull through site with full hookups including free WIFI. The campground has a pool, playground, and laundry. We did not use the bath houses so can’t comment on them. The sites are very tight and the roads in the campground very narrow. The campground is located so close to I-80 that the traffic noise is very loud. It is so close to I-80 that we sat outside the camper and watched the traffic go by on the interstate. We practically had to shout to talk to each other.. There is a Walmart a couple of miles away and restaurants about 5 miles from the campground.

6/9/11 Buffalo River State Park, Glyndon, MN Site 2

This is a very nice state park. We arrived without reservations and picked our site which backed up onto the prairie. We had electric only at the site. Be sure to fill your fresh water tank before setting up. The site was a long, paved back in with grass all around and plenty of room between sites. We had a fire ring and a picnic table. The campground is shaded with a good number of trees. There is a swimming area within walking distance and a nice nature trail through the prairie.

This is a small state park located near Aberdeen, SD. Our site was paved with electric at the site. Be sure to fill your fresh water tank at the dump station as you enter the park. There was hardly anyone in the park so we chose our site near the lake. The sites are surrounded by grass and there are plenty of trees for shade. The camp hosts were very nice and helpful. The closest grocery store is Kessler’s in Aberdeen. The park was very quiet and peaceful when we were there.

6/3/11 Whistler Gulch RV Park, Deadwood, SD Site 304

This is an older park located at the top of a hill about a mile from Deadwood, SD. The location is great. We chose it mainly so we could take the trolley into Deadwood. Our site was a gravel pull through with full hookups, fire pit, picnic table and WIFI. It was not long enough to park our truck so we parked it beside the road which was not a problem. There is a nice laundry and pool at the campground. The staff were very helpful. There is a Walmart and other shopping in Spearfish and a small grocery store in nearby Lead. There are casinos, restaurants, shops and entertainment on Main Street in Deadwood. Every day in summer there is a shootout on the street and reenactment of the shooting of Wild Bill Hicock.

5/31/11 Custer State Park, Custer, SD Game Lodge Campground Site 12

We loved it here! There are several campgrounds in Custer State Park and our site was in Game Lodge Campground. All of the sites were large, paved sites surrounded by grass. Each site had a picnic table and fire ring with electric only at the site. Be sure to fill your fresh water tank at one of the water spigots before setting up. Game Lodge has a dump station, some of the other campgrounds don’t. The bath houses were very clean. There is also a small laundry. The campsites are surrounded by grass and there are some recently planted trees in the field. There is a small creek which runs alongside the campground.
Custer State Park is located in the Black Hills of South Dakota and is a popular vacation destination. The state park has a large herd of bison which can be seen from the Wildlife Loop Drive. The Needles Highway and Iron Mountain Road are other beautiful scenic drives in the park. Mount Rushmore and Crazy Horse Monument are close by.

5/27/11 Elk Meadow RV, Park Estes Park, CO

This park is located just outside of Rocky Mountain National Park. It is a large campground with many RV and tent sites. We had a gravel pull through with fire ring, picnic table, WIFI and full hookups. We had plenty of room for our slides. The sites are close together but the location and views of the mountains makes up for that. The best part about the park is its location. Less than 5 minutes in one direction you are in the national park and 5 minutes in the other direction in the town of Estes Park. We were here on Memorial Day Weekend and although the campground was almost full it didn’t feel overly crowded.

By far this is one of the nicest campgrounds, public or private, that we have stayed in. All the sites are paved, full hookup. The roads to the campground are paved. Our site was a big pull through with a few steps up to a patio area with picnic table, fire pit and tent area. We were right next to Cheyenne Mountain and had a fantastic view of the city of Colorado Springs. There is a nice camp store, laundry, and bath house. The campground is an easy drive to Pike’s Peak, Garden of the Gods and other attractions in the Colorado Springs area. There is a Safeway 2 miles from the campground.

This state park is located about 15 miles from the Great Sand Dunes National Monument. Our site was a large dirt and gravel pull through with covered picnic table and fire pit. We didn't have reservations so we picked our site and then registered at the office. The rangers were very helpful. From our campsite we had views of the lake, the Sangre de Christo mountains, and the Great Sand Dunes. We did not use the bath houses so we can't comment on them. We stayed at the park 4 years ago and decided to stay again mainly to eat at the Big Texan about a mile away. We paid the Passport America rate of $16.50. Our site was a pull through but we were nose to nose with another rig. We had to back out when we left. The site is level, mostly dirt with a little gravel with full hookups, cable, and free WIFI. There is an indoor pool and laundry at the park. The bath house and laundry were very clean. It is conveniently located just off I-40 and we can hear the traffic go by. There is a Walmart close by. 5/14/11 Copper Breaks State Park, Quanah, TX Site 4

This park is located about 15 miles south of Hwy 287 west of Wichita Falls. We were arriving on a Saturday so we called ahead to see if we needed reservations and they told us to just come on. We checked in at the office and the rangers were very helpful and assigned us a site we would fit in. Our site is a 40 foot level back in site with water and electric. The pad is gravel with the rest of the site grass. The picnic table and grill are on a paved pad under a roof. There is also a fire pit which we couldn’t use because of a fire ban. Behind our site are Mesquite, Juniper and other trees. The park has an interesting history and badland type bluffs along the river. Definitely a hidden gem in Texas. The highlight of our stay was seeing their herd of Texas Longhorns.

5/12/11 Bluebonnet Ridge RV Park, Terrell, TX Site 50

We stayed here 5 years ago on our first RV trip and wanted to return. It is just as nice as we remembered. Our site was a level, gravel pull through with plenty of room between our site and neighbors on either side. We had full hookups with free WIFI, cable and a picnic table on a paved pad. There is a nice laundry and the bathrooms are spotless. The staff is very friendly and helpful. Amenities include a pool, a small lake with catch and release fishing, and a fenced in dog play area which our dog loved. The park is nicely landscaped and very well maintained. I give it a 10.

We stayed in this park in 2006 on our way west and decided to stay here again. The park is part of the Ameristar Casino. We were on the end of one of the rows in the back and had a tree which provided shade for our picnic table. Most of the sites had no shade. 1/15/2011 St. Joseph Peninsula State Park Site 102 Port St. Joe, FL

Site 102 Shady Pines Campground
Our site at St. Joseph Peninsula State Park was one of the few paved sites in the Shady Pines Campground. We had water and electric, a picnic table and fire pit. The site was just a few steps from the bathhouse and the path to the beach was across the road from our site. The sites are wide with trees and shrubs between most of the sites. The state park is located at the end of St. Joseph Peninsula which is located between Panama City and Apalachicola. The beach is a beautiful white sand beach with huge sand dunes. We saw deer in the park and lots of shore birds in St. Joseph Bay. The campground was not crowded when we were there.  There is a marina with a boat launch in the park. There are also hiking trails. There is another campground in the park which does not have as many trees.

Site 103 Shady Pines Campground
UPDATE: We returned in December, 2011 to site 103 in the Shady Pines Campground. Both campgrounds were almost full over New Year's weekend but most people left after the holiday. Even during the holiday weekend the beach was not crowded.

We stopped at the Calhoun KOA just off of I-75. Our site was dirt with full hookups. The campground had a pool, playground, a nice covered picnic area for groups, and a new looking building for meetings. We were there over the weekend and the campground was pretty crowded. It seemed to be a popular place for groups. The campground looked like it was once very nice but was a little run down when we were there. The campsites were very close together. This park could be very nice with a little TLC.
