DECEMBER, 2012 UPDATE - The electric sites can now be reserved on www.recreation.gov
We stayed in the trailer section of Flamingo Campground. All sites are very long pull through sites with plenty of room on both sides between you and your neighbor. There are no hookups. You can run your generator from 8 am until 8 pm. There is a dump station in the campground with fresh water to fill your holding tank. There are two bath houses with toilets and cold showers. We had a grill at our site. There were plenty of empty sites in early December. Bring everything you need with you. It is a long way to the nearest store in Homestead. Flamingo suffered a lot of damage from Hurricane Wilma in 2005. There are boat rentals and boat tours available at the marina.
January, 2012 UPDATE
We returned to Flamingo in January, 2012. There are now 40 electric sites that are first come, first served. We arrived early in the afternoon and got the last electric site! The trailer section of the campground was almost full.

Ortona South COE Park, LaBelle, FL Sites 40 and 22, 11/29/09
This is by far the nicest Corps of Engineers Park we have been to. The campground is located at Ortona Lock and Dam on the canal connecting the east and west coast of Florida. Ft. Myers is about an hour drive west and Clewiston is about a 30 minute drive east. All sites have large, paved pads and large gravel picnic area with covered picnic table, fire pit and grill. All sites have water and electric. There is a dump station conveniently located on the way out of the park. The bath houses are spotless and there is one washer and one dryer in the laundry room. Many sites are water front. You can walk across the dam to watch boats go through the lock. The nearest town is La Belle where you will find 3 grocery stores, a laundromat, and several fast food restaurants.
